Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
