Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
